Around York

Braille

The Centre has a copy of a Braille map of York City Centre, produced by the Royal Institute for the Blind, which visitors are welcome to consult.

Talking Signs
The City of York Council has installed 17 'Talking Signs' throughout the City of York. Talking signs relay information in an audible, verbal format and provide the same information to visually-impaired people that printed signs provide to the sighted community.

A special fob is needed to activate the talking sign. If you are wearing this badge, and come within five to seven meters of a talking sign, the sign automatically begins speaking the information associated with that sign. The signs give orientation advice about the location rather than route guidance and help visually-impaired people have a more independent journey around York.

York residents can get these fobs on permanent loan from YBPSS. Visitors to York who are registered visually impaired, can borrow badges short-term from YBPSS. For more information contact: York Blind and Partially Sighted Society, Holgate Villa, 22 Holgate Road, York YO24 4AB. Tel: 01904 636269.
